IV: 8
WINCHMORE HILL III: 1
13.10.2007
After shipping 8
goals in their first home game of the season, Harpenden IV were
keen to put the record straight against a club who've been more
than helpful to their goal difference over the last few years
(6 wins in 7, including a 10-0 victory).
Harpenden started well and were rewarded quite
early on with Neil Berry pushing a short corner in and then taking
his place by the post to slot the ball past the keeper following
a mis-hit strike. Harpenden had the majority of possession but
couldn't get the final shot on target, with the usually reliable
Malcolm Jones the main culprit. Geoff Gould, playing the holding
midfield role occupied by Jon Pagan for much of last season, showed
Jones how it was done to put us 2-0 up, and Jones followed his
example to slot one away. 3-0 at half time, but Harpenden knew
it could, and should, have been more. With the 10K run the following
day, captain Graham Dean decided to give himself a rest, a move
which he later decided was a masterstroke (after the 10K...)
The second half followed a similar pattern, and Jones seemed to
have refound his goalscoring touch when he claimed a second not
long after the break. WH&E mounted their first meaningful
attack, almost catching Harpenden off-guard but Neil Smyth was
alert and made 2 excellent stops to deny them a goal. A break
for Harpenden saw a 3 on 2 develop, but Jones went alone and expertly
chipped the ball over the oncoming keeper from 15 yards out. After
a period of dominance, Harpenden began to concede fouls in their
own half and eventually they were made to pay from a long corner.
The goal seemed to refocus Harpenden and from the next attack
Berry crossed the ball to the back post where Rich Harle was unmarked
and flicked the ball into the net from all of 2 yards. Not to
be outdone, Ryan Ely repeated the feat 2 minutes later, getting
on the end of another cross and converting it. A few more attacks
came to nothing, before Gould got his second of the game to wrap
things up.
