Harpenden 3s missed the opportunity to get
back to winning ways last Saturday, recording a 0-0 draw away
at Cheshunt, after dominating much of the game. The current dearth
of goals may cause problems for Pete Evans’ side during
the rest of the season, as Finnish Death Metal band the Children
of Bodom put it in their much loved opus “Mass Hypnosis”
“Looking inside, your future
uncertain
The fear grows as a sickness uncured”
Words that the currently impotent strikers Tom
Preest and Andy Barradell will no doubt take to heart.
Harpenden dominated the early exchanges,
and it felt like a goal would come in due course. However the
Cheshunt defence was admirably resilient through out the afternoon,
with the home keeper pulling off some excellent saves, particularly
in the second half.
The best chance of the opening period fell
to youngster Adam Cole, who continued in his impressive form throughout
the game, combining well with James Bird down the right hand side.
Cole made a beautiful run in side the last defender, and picked
up the ball just outside the D. The teenager did well to steady
himself and take the ball wide of the keeper, but his shot narrowly
went the wrong side of the post.
Cheshunt came into the game in the second
half, but Harpenden’s defence remained strong, with Neil
Liles impressive at centre half and Matt Beggs continuing his
good form in goal with a number of timely interventions.
Harpenden were still doing the majority
of attacking, especially when moving the ball down the flanks,
where Stuart Berry and Andy Salmon contributed well. Captain Evans
manufactured some space at the top of the D, and got away a goal
bound flick that the keeper did brilliantly to repel. The keeper
was called upon again in the final few minutes, as he saved Preest’s
first time effort at the near post, which ensured the game finished
0-0. A deserved point for the home side, but a disappointment
for the visitors.
