III: 2
BROXBOURNE V: 3
07.10.06
Despite the very early start in Hitchen,
the 3s played some excellent hockey right from the off. Broxbourne
were being carved open by the movement and pace of Thompson, Flitcroft,
Moore and Simon Evans, prompted from the middle by Holland and
Peter Evans. Whilst some early chances went begging, we kept going
and were rewarded as Thompson crashed home a short corner.
As too often happens, we sat back allowing Broxbourne to find
their feet in the match and equalise though their own well worked
corner routine. This galvinised Harpenden back into action and
another superb passing movement (reminiscent of the legendary
17 pass goal against the same opposition on the same pitch last
year) left Flitcroft one-on-one with their keeper and he coolly
slotted home into the far corner.
Unfortunately, we were unable to convert the advantage into the
further goals that the performance really deserved and were made
to pay after the break, when Broxbourne put an extra man in the
midfield and upped their tempo. We were unable relieve the pressure
and spent most of the second half on the back foot. Errors crept
in at the back and Broxbourne scored twice from short corners,
the first being a very unlucky deflection wrong-footing the covering
defence.
In the final 10 minutes, we rallied with Priest going close on
a couple of occasions but the Broxbourne keeper looked comfortable.
Very much a game of two halves, we’ll now be looking to
build on the positives of the first half.
