WEST HERTS II: 1
21.10.06
Harpenden
continued to pile in the goals on Saturday with another convincing
win in Prem B of the East League. The Kingston Smith sponsored
side looked very much in control from the off, maintaining long
spells of possession and running their opponents ragged.
West
Herts, too their credit, managed to quash any impending Harpenden
attack during the first 10 minutes but their early discipline
faltered when a loose pass across the back was swooped upon by
Russell Timms. He intercepted the ball at the top of the D and
with only the keeper to beat, finished neatly in the bottom left
hand corner.
This changed
the balance of the match with West Herts being forced to come
out and attack. Harpenden took advantage of the extra space created
in midfield and soon took the game to a higher level. Tom Kavanah
at inside right was making it look all too easy at he swept passed
3 West Herts players to lay the ball on for Spencer Mbanga who
duly won a short corner. A slick corner routine then followed
which saw captain Mike Emes open his account for the day and also
for the season with a neat drag-flick passed the spellbound keeper.
An action replay followed a matter of minutes later and it was
soon apparent that a weak spot had been found in West Herts defence
which could and was exploited. Just before the half time whistle
Emes got his hatrick by another drag flick from a short corner
to the bottom right.
4-0 at half
time was a comfortable score-line for the home side but they continued
to impress during the early stages of the second half. Emes slotted
home 1 more short corner to take him to an impressive tally of
4 for the match. West Herts got a consolation goal towards the
end of the second half but by then it was all wrapped up with
the final score of 5-1 not unjust for the day’s efforts.
Harpenden know tougher matches lie ahead starting with a long
trip to Bourne next Saturday, and the month of November will really
test their ability and how far they have come this season when
they meet the top 3 teams in the league.
