Drawn away to Peterborough
Athletic in the first round of the HA trophy, Harpenden were more
than keen to extend their winning run to 4 games.
Although Harpenden did not start at their best they were still
able to take an early lead. Nigel Timms robbed the Athletic sweeper
of possession and made and scored the opening goal from nowhere.
This fantastic solo effort worked to settle Harpenden, and from
this point on they never looked back.
Nigel Timms continued to wreak havoc and he was ably supported
by Andy Lunn up front who was making his opening first team appearance
for the season. A second goal was due and well deserved when it
came. Todd Baines was able to get behind the Peterborough defence
down the right wing, and his cross from the back line put the
home side in all sorts of trouble. Andy Lunn was quick to react
and was on hand to put the ball away.
After the break Harpenden continued to create chances and managed
to grab a third from a short corner. Nigel Timms’ solo break
was brought to a halt by a Peterborough foot and so the short
corner was awarded. Matt Horn picked his spot with the strike
and the keeper was left with no chance.
Peterborough worked hard to try and get back into the game but
the Harpenden defence worked well to restrict most chances at
goal.
The Peterborough goal came too late for them to have any chance
of mounting a comeback, but it was worth waiting for. A well worked
short corner deflection left keeper Ben Brind with no chance.
Harpenden were able to see out the game with most of the possession
to cap a successful weekend.
Harpenden will travel to the South coast to face Hamble in round
2 on December 5th
