SHEFFORD & SANDY: 3
HARPENDEN: 3

18.12.04

Harpenden came from behind to rescue a point in a game which form would have suggested they should have won. An early goal from a short corner strike gave Harpenden the dream start. David Jeffrey’s strike beat the keeper and was too much for the defending post man to deal with.

Harpenden were unable to push on from this and Shefford and Sandy levelled the scores through a penalty stroke. Harpenden again took the game back to Shefford and Sandy and enjoyed their best spell of the game, with Paul Davison dictating the play from the middle of the park. A fluid passing move found Peter Kneale wide open in the Semi-Circle and his excellent finish put the Blues back in the lead. Harpenden again made mistakes in possession and looked vulnerable at the back. Shefford and Sandy equalised again to make the scores 2-2 at half time.

Harpenden pushed on looking to take the lead once more but were caught on the break when a deflected shot looped just under the crossbar. Harpenden continued to search for a goal but were unable to turn possession in clear chances. The equalising goal came from a stroke as a Matt Horn shot was stopped on the line by a defending foot. Captain Mike Emes stepped up and confidently converted to bring the scores level once more. Harpenden came closest to scoring the winner when Nigel Timms’ shot went just over the cross bar, but it was not to be there day.

Harpenden go into the Christmas break in 5th place and 6 points off a promotion spot and will need to put a serious run together in the New Year if they are going to be in contention at the end of the season.
