Harpenden reached the half way point of
the season in style on Saturday with a convincing performance
against a struggling Cheshunt side. A hatrick from Ali (Jabba
the) Hutson, a superb goal crafted entirely by the Timms brothers
and a top class performance from man of the match Todd Baines
were just some of the highlights.
Harpenden
started brightly and it was clear from the outset that their pace
and work rate was going to give Cheshunt difficulties. Harpenden
threatened, early on but squandered any early chances and were
making far too many elementary mistakes when in possession.
Harpenden
kept pressing and eventually found the breakthrough. The ball
fell loose from the keepers’ pads and Pete Kneale was the
first to react, slotting home the opening goal. Harpenden grew
in confidence from this and managed to pick up three more goals
in the first half. Mark Wakeling, scored his first for the Blues,
a Russell Timms pass found, Wakeling at the top of the D who slipped
it to Todd Baines. Baines’ strike was saved but Wakeling
was there to collect the rebound and left the keeper with no chance
with his shot. The third goal came as the result of a fine combination
of passes from the two Timms Brothers. A string of one two’s
between Russell and Nigel from within the Harpenden half cut the
Cheshunt defence wide open. Russell committed the keeper and unselfishly
set up his brother, who reverse sticked his way to glory. Striker,
Ali (Jabba the) Hutson, wasn’t going to miss out on the
party and he managed to score a fine solo goal by rounding the
keeper and tapping in for his first of the day.
At
four-nil up at half time most captains would be pretty relaxed,
but skipper Mike Emes demanded more. With a clean sheet being
the main aim for the rest of the game the Blues set about their
work and it was not long until they added to their tally. Paul
Davison broke from right back and centred to find Ali (Jabba the)
Hutson at the near post. Hutson made no mistake in finding the
backboard and set about searching for a third. Goal number six
came from a free hit just outside the D. Mike Emes’ pass
found Pete Kneale in a run across the face of goal, Kneale deflected
home for his second of the game. The Blues kept working to the
end and Ali Hutson eventually got his third with a shot from the
top of the semicircle. This rounded off a fine team performance
with Harpenden reaping the rewards for their endeavour.
