WIN PRE-SEASON TOURNY
20.9.04
Harpenden travelled to Cheshunt for their
final warm up before the league season starts next week. Two wins
and a draw later, Harpenden will go into next week full of confidence.
Harpenden
I: 5
Cheshunt II: 0
Harpenden
started in impressive fashion with a 5-0 win over Cheshunt 2’s.
Harpenden dominated possession and Cheshunt were unable to cope
with the Blues’ work rate. Russell Timms contributed with
two goals and is clearly enjoying playing up front again this
season. The other goals came from Todd Baines, Ali Hutson and
David Jeffrey, who finished coolly to score his first goal for
the club.
Harpenden
I: 1
St Albans III: 1
Harpenden
found the going a little tougher in their second game. St. Albans
were quick to put Harpenden under pressure. St. Albans were on
top for most of the game and when Matt Horn gifted St. Albans
possession they didn’t need an invitation to take advantage,
going 1-0 up through a sweetly struck reverse stick shot. The
Blues weren’t going to give up without a fight, especially
in a derby match like this. Harpenden started to pile on the pressure
and soon made this count when they won a penalty stroke for a
St. Albans foot on the goal line. Russell Timms was looking for
his third goal of the day and made no mistake when he slotted
the ball into the bottom right hand corner.

Folkstone I: 2
In the final
match of the day Harpenden managed to come away with a hard fought
victory. After going a goal behind on two occasions they managed
to fight back to eventually win the game 3-2. Niall Blackwell
scored Harpenden’s first to make it 1-1, latching on to
a David Jeffrey pass in a well worked short corner move for the
second time in two weeks. After going 2-1 down, Harpenden fought
back again with a slick move down the left, Todd Baines put in
Matt Horn for an easy finish to round off the attack. Harpenden
pushed on from here and at the next short corner Skipper Mike
Emes scored the final goal of the day. A slip left found Emes,
who had plenty of time to pick his spot. He aimed top right, it
went bottom left, but it was still enough to beat the Folkestone
keeper, and was as fitting an end to the day as Monty’s
putt in Detroit.
Harpenden
will be pleased with their days work and seem to be rediscovering
a winning habit after a difficult season last year. The Blues
have improved week on week during preseason and will hope that
this pattern will continue into the league.
