Harpenden I: 2
Saffron
Walden I: 0
26.11.2005
Harpenden started a confident team and dominated
the game throughout. Fluent passing from back to front, excellent
leading runs and practised set plays all contributed to an impressive
performance.
England carried on her fine form with some exhilarating
runs up the right wing, linking well with Lincoln who made endless
cross to the P spot from the back line.
The first head injury of the game came from a
rare attack, Saffron Walden attacked down their left wing, Gardner
stepped across to make the tackle and the ball was flicked into
the side of her head. With no real harm done a Hit out was awarded
and the game progressed with Harpenden in possession.
Harpenden were determined to be on top at the end of the first
half, this showed with Rees and Lythgoe testing the keeper a number
of times.
Harpenden had several close shaves, but ironically
the opener came from an own goal, Lincoln the provider in the
D fizzed a ball across the goal mouth, with Rees poised for the
knock in a defender stepped in and helped Harpenden on their way.
Lincoln was awarded the goal as the only attacker to touch the
ball in the D.
It wasn’t long before the second Head injury
of the game struck, Becky Concagh who had stepped up from the
two’s once more went in for a tackle deep into the Saffron
Walden defence, a wind up saw the ball lifted and struck Becky
in the nose. Becky was forced to leave the play. Sub Watson entered
the pitch.
Harpenden wanted to put the game to rest knowing
they had no subs left, Quinn who had a strong game attacked with
Lynam in the middle, Lincoln was fed the ball, in true style a
short corner was won. Harpenden had already had several shorts
but none had gone to plan, this was to be a different story. Rees
fed, Gardner received and with only one thing in mind shot low
and hard into the keeper’s bottom left corner, Harpenden
were up 2-0!
Harpenden still attacked trying to seal the win
early, a carbon copy of Gardner’s first goal was almost
had, but this time the shot went narrowly wide.
Half time came and Harpenden were very happy.
With no subs left and a cup match still to play
the following day Harpenden took it easy to see out the game,
inevitably this left a few gaps for Saffron Walden to attack but
Harpenden were strong in defence with Slough, Gardner, Quinn and
Borman all making timely tackles.
A short corner was awarded against Harpenden as
the third head injury was taken, Gardner went in for a block and
the ball rebounded up into her jaw, after a few choice words Gardner
continued, and Harps defended the short well!
Harpenden woke slightly and jolted there selves
into action. Although no further goals were won Harpenden had
achieved their first clean sheet of the season and were happy
to finish with no further injuries!
