| Harpenden I: 2
Old De Ferrians I: 0
27.11.2005
With a bye in the first round of the vase
Harpenden set about their first match to progress to round three.
Travelling to Woodham Ferrers and with their first
clean sheet in the bag Harpenden knew this was a no messing game.
Injured captain Dear led the team talk and the
message was clear we do not want extra time and pens, let’s
get the job done and get home for our roasts!
Harpenden started a little sleepy with ODF leading
the first attack, some miss communication led to Harpenden taking
five minutes to get on their feet but once they did there was
no way they were going to lose this game!
Harpenden flood forward with virtually every player
in the oppositions half. Rees, Lythgoe and Lincoln all came close
to opening the account, the press was impressive and the ball
rarely came into the Harps half. Natalia Boniface who stepped
in for Dear was impressive with her front man marking and mopped
up every lose ball to keep Harpenden in possession and attacking
the ODF defence. Lincoln won a free hit just outside the D which
Lynam took, a beautiful ball in was deflected goal ward and slammed
into the back board, after some dispute and some honesty from
the Harpenden camp the goal was disallowed because no attacker
actually touched the ball.
Harpenden took the long corner quickly and Lynam
shot wide.
Harps piled on the pressure and were awarded a
short corner the V was put into practise but Gardner who was reasonably
cold miss-controlled and a hit out was won.
The first goal came via Rees, Lincoln who provided
endless cross’ all game pulled one back for Rees who impressively
turned goal ward!
Half time came with no more goals and Harpenden
felt they should have been up a few more goals.
More of the same was had by Harp’s as they
dominated the match, several shorts were won and although the
trainers got it wrong, the team used there own method, Gardner
powered a ball to the right post where England was waiting to
get a touch and turn the ball in, but not before Harps had a goal
disallowed for the second time as Watson received the slip left
from a short corner and netted the ball, the goal was deemed and
under cut and therefore didn’t stand!
Harpenden barely wobbled in 70 minutes, Vicky
Quinn who had a second successive Man of the match performance,
worked hard throughout, with plenty of hard tackles and endless
energy! The only criticism would be Harpenden should have scored
more!
Keeper Bab’s Clark commented after the match
“I’m glad I put on my thermals because I’m cold
enough as it is!!”
Harpenden progress to the next round (22nd of
January 2006) where they meet Banbury in an away fixture.
