HARPENDEN I: 2
LETCHWORTH I: 1

24th September 2005

The ladies 1’s played Letchworth 2’s in there second league match of the season. Captain Sue Dear was keen to rectify last week’s loss with maximum points this week.

Harpenden started positive and worked the ball well, some interlinking play between Lynam, Borman and Lincoln helped the Harps progress goal ward.

It was Letchworth however that gained the first Short corner of the game via a quick break from a very skillful centre forward who tested Boniface throughout! Borman who ran number 1 put enough pressure on the short corner striker to see the shot which was well struck go miles wide.

Harpenden re grouped and pushed forward, this time it was Dear and Hesling linking together and giving the Letchworth Defence some problems, a cross from Hesling was met by Rees who laid off to Lincoln, Lincoln struck but her old team mate got her feet in the way to concede a short corner Harpenden first of many.

A miss directed ball from Rees saw Quinn with her first shot of the game, but Letchworth stood strong and won possession.

It was to be Letchworth who scored first against the run of play again there Centre forward giving the Harpenden Defence some problems, Boniface and Gardner were left scratching there heads as the ball hit the back board. Keeper Clark was unlucky not to save.

Harpenden found themselves starring defeat in the face, Jac Smith again lead the team talk and wisely commented ‘ You're playing some really good hockey and don’t deserve to be losing, however pretty hockey doesn’t win you matches; goals win you matchess’

Second half started much the same as the first and the Harps had all the pressure, some good work at the back sore the ball switching from right to left where Georgia had positioned herself beautifully, the ball was fed up to Watson who switched the ball over to the right, a fast ball was fed in by Lynam and Lincoln pounced scoring her first of many goals against her old club! The delight was for all to see!

Harpenden were hungry for the win a carried on pushing forward, this time Watson made an influential run into the D after the fourth consecutive foul Watson still had possession and choose to strike, beating the keeper however the Umpires whistle beat her and the goal was disallowed, a short corner was awarded but was of little cancellation.

Not to be defeated Harp’s put some good short corner routines together but three in a row mounted to no result. The fourth short corner was struck well by Lynam who was top D, the ball was cleared, Lynam picked up and slipped left to Gardner who was still positioned well, choosing to under cut the ball Gardner shot wide and nearly damaged the umpire who showed good athleticism to avoid the ball!

The next attack came shortly after and was lead by Lincoln and Lynam; Lincoln used her trade mark skills to win yet another short corner.

It was Gardner who used the straight strike this time a well hit shot which traveled towards the bottom left corner, Rees had made a run onto the post and got the narrowest of touch’s to be awarded the goal.

The final whistle came and Harp’s were the much happier team. If there was to be any criticism it would be Harpenden should have scored more.

Harpenden look forward to a difficult match against last years relegated side Blue Harts.
