Harpenden 1st XI took on bottom of the league
strugglers DMU on Saturday and was keen not to slip up and take
maximum points from the game.
Harp’s started as they meant to go on. The
whistle was blown and Harp’s kept possession from the pushback,
a good run by England was linked well with Lincoln and Lincoln
won the side a short corner. Within the first minute Lincoln had
scored with a well executed straight strike. Harpenden kept on
the pressure and won two more consecutive shorts. Lincoln almost
produced a carbon copy of her goal twice, and maybe should have
had a hat trick in the first 5 minutes.
Harp’s carried on with the dominance and
put continued pressure on the DMU defence. Subsequent strikes
by England, Rees and Lythgoe were saved well.
Finally Harp’s got the second goal through
Lythgoe who capitalized on some scrappy defending by DMU, Lythgoe
was five yards out and pushed the ball home.
The half time whistle came and Harp’s were
smiling but knew they should have been at least 5 or 6 goals up
already.
Knowing the 1st XI needed to up their goal difference
Harpenden set about scoring more goals as the second half got
under way.
It was to be Rees who showed the initiative with
a fine strike from close range, the keeper dived well to save
but the result was disappointing for DMU as the Keeper pulled
knee ligaments in the process and had to be by the stand in keeper.
There was only one team in the game, as Harp’s dominated
throughout. England scored the third goal from more sloppy defending
and the ball trickled over the line.
Concagh also got on the score sheet as she continued
to show impressive play, a fine first strike was saved by the
keeper but Concagh’s reactions were good as the ball was
kicked directly back to her, this time the shot wasn’t as
clean but it was enough to beat the keeper at the near post, Harpenden
were now 4-0 up.
Their was time for a fifth again England the scorer,
Concagh turned provider as she drove the ball to the back line
and pulled the ball back to England who awaited the ball and slapped
the ball home first time to leave the keeper with no chance!
Their were occasional wobbles as Harp’s
let DMU break throughout but on the whole the performance could
not be faulted and the concentration was high despite a physical
DMU side. 5-0 was a brilliant result but Harp’s no there
could have been more goals.
Harp’s rest the night for a difficult away
fixture tomorrow in the vase against Banbury.
